| About Homo turisticus
I dislike feeling at home when I am abroad George Bernard Shaw
Homo turisticus is edited by the Italian anthropologist Duccio Canestrini. The site mainly deals with the anthropology of travel and hospitality, but some other issues are taken in account, as for instance body, wellness and security.
Short descriptions of Duccio Canestrini books, lectures (multimedia presentations) and documentaries
(English text, after Italian intro) are here online. More details are available on the italian version of this web site.
As for travels and tourism, Homo turisticus provides an original viewpoint of the touristic "species" and over recreational land uses. Travel myths, holiday rites of passage and touristic encounters are its research field. Over the last decades it seems that everybody has travelled to just about everywhere. But there’s something risky in the side effects of global tourism.
A responsible tourism protects natural resources, respects different cultures and improves everybody's quality of life. Although ecotourism and sustainability have become buzz words, and in such risk dying of media overkill, new representations and new manners in tourism are investigated and largely practiced. Tourism needs innovation, and new ideas often come from social sciences.
